About Us

CAN-UG

CAN-U members place a high priority on both a healthy environment and development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. CAN-U’s initial vision was to protect the atmosphere while allowing for sustainable and equitable national development. CAN-U members work through information exchange and a coordinated strategy to promote government and individual action to tackle climate change issues in the country. At present, 2012, OXFAM-GB, is serving as the secretariat for the network as well as the host.

CAN-U has a strong membership comprising:

  • Networks related with climate change issues
  • NGO and INGOs
  • Academia
  • International Agencies
  • Private Sector

CAN-U has participated in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (CoP) events, specifically, CoP 16 and CoP 17 with a view to influencing national and global climate change policies.  It was the leader of the CSO delegation to CoP 17 in Durban and participated in the popular “Caravan of Hope.” To prepare for and to account to its constituents, CAN-U also organized some pre and post CoP events.

More recently, CAN-U established linkages with the Climate Change Unit (CCU), which is under the Ministry of Water and Environment and the Parliamentary Forum on Climate Change (PFCC). A newsletter spearheaded by Environmental Management on Livelihoods Improvement (EMLI) was released while a website is running and a database of members is available.

Climate Action Network – Uganda was formed as a country network of Climate Action Network International (CAN-I) to forge collaboration and networking among all the national relevant stakeholders to tackle the climate change issues.........
